City of Muskegon Plants New Trees Thanks to Consumers Energy Grant
Muskegon, MI – The City of Muskegon is excited to announce the successful planting of 15 new trees in residential terraces, made possible through a generous $3,000 grant from the Consumers Energy Community Street & Boulevard Tree Planting Grant Program. This program, administered by the Michigan Forestry and Park Association on behalf of Consumers Energy’s Forestry Operations Department, supports local municipalities by providing funding for tree planting along public streets and boulevards.
The initiative aligns with the city’s long-term goal to “enhance amenities that positively affect residents’ quality of life and attract visitors,” as stated in the 2022-2027 City Strategic Plan. By planting trees along residential streets, the city aims to increase green spaces, provide shade, and boost the aesthetic appeal of neighborhoods—ultimately creating a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
“We’re grateful to Consumers Energy for this opportunity to add greenery to our community,” said Dave Bailey, Park Maintenance II Worker. “These trees will not only improve the appearance of our neighborhoods but also contribute to the health and well-being of our residents.”
The City of Muskegon received the maximum grant reimbursement of $3,000 for 15 approved trees. All trees were planted in the terrace—the area between the sidewalk and the road—based on requests from residents interested in adding shade and visual appeal to their properties. Tree species were carefully selected to ensure long-term sustainability and compliance with program guidelines.
Consumers Energy’s Community Street & Boulevard Tree Planting Grant Program assists communities by focusing on the appropriate selection of tree species and planting locations. Eligible municipalities within Consumers Energy’s electric service area can receive up to $200 per approved tree, with a maximum reimbursement of $3,000 per municipality each calendar year. The grant program requires application approval, project completion, and documentation within a set timeframe.
