Muskegon, MI — On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, during the regularly scheduled City Commission meeting, the City of Muskegon proudly announced the approval of a new logo and brand kit. This marks a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to revitalize and modernize its identity, reflecting the vibrant, diverse, and resilient community that Muskegon has become.

The rebranding process was rooted in extensive community engagement, with more than 1200 stakeholders providing input. This inclusive approach began with the presentation of an engagement plan to the City Commission on October 24, 2023. The plan prioritized gathering both qualitative and quantitative data from the community, guiding the design work to ensure it reflected the true spirit of Muskegon.

Mayor Ken Johnson reflects, “This fresh, dynamic brand represents our city’s spirit and resilience. As we continue to evolve, our brand will remain a reflection of all our community members, celebrating the unique and diverse elements that make Muskegon the magnificent place it is.” Mayor Johnson is commenting on how the tile design builds the letter “M” that makes up the new logo.

The City Commission approved Kindred Marketing Agency last year to spearhead this initiative, ensuring the new brand would resonate with all residents and stakeholders. “Our city is a mosaic of people with different passions, lifestyles, ideas, and backgrounds. We know we can’t please everyone, so we used the data and the brand story to inspire an inclusive mark,” said Don Kalisz, Owner of Kindred Marketing Agency.

The new logo and brand kit symbolize Muskegon’s dynamic evolution and the community’s shared vision for the future. Residents and visitors will soon see the old logo replaced throughout the city, with updates funded through regular city budgets to ensure fiscal responsibility.

The City of Muskegon’s Community Engagement Manager, Deborah Sweet shared “I want to extend heartfelt gratitude to all who participated in this rebranding journey. Together, we have created a brand that honors our past, celebrates our present, and inspires our future.”
