Keeping of Chickens


Chicken Keeping & Enclosure Requirements
• A development permit is required to keep chickens in the city.
• Up to 6 female chickens may be kept on a residential property that is at least 3,000 square feet in size.
• Roosters are not allowed in the city.
• Ground feeding is prohibited. All feedings shall be contained in the chicken coop, the fenced or covered enclosure. All unused or unconsumed food shall be adequately secured and stored after every feeding.
• The chicken coop cannot be taller than 10 feet and must be located at least 5 feet from the side and rear property line.
• The chicken coop must be located at least 25 feet from any dwelling.
• All chickens must be kept in a chicken coop, which shall be in a fenced or covered enclosure. The fenced or covered enclosure must comply with all setback requirements established in the Zoning Ordinance and cannot cover more than 50% of the rear yard.
• A site plan showing all aspects of the fenced or covered enclosure shall be provided with the development permit application.
• The chicken coop must be maintained and repaired in a manner that is resistant to predators.

Please note: When submitting a development permit, a site plan showing the size and location of the chicken coop with all setbacks measured and labeled.
