The Muskegon Police Department offers a one-day Citizen’s Public Safety Workshop. This program is hands-on and intended to provide citizens 18 years of age and older with a better understanding of the functions of law enforcement and the importance of public safety. It also aims to dispel misconceptions and increase positive communication between citizens and police. Topics include use of force, de-escalation tactics, mental health awareness, drone unit, traffic stops and fire extinguishing.
The program is free, but space is limited to 20 attendees. Anyone interested must submit an application and agree to a background check to be considered for acceptance to the workshop.
The next workshop is on October 18, 2024. Apply here.
Participants will be doing physical activities such as walking, standing for up to one hour and lifting up to 10 lbs. Participants will also be subject to discussions on gun violence and put into representational police scenarios.
