Demolition of “Skeleton Building” Downtown
June 24, 2025
MUSKEGON, MI — The City of Muskegon is marking a different kind of milestone today at 880 1st Street. Commonly referred to as the “Skeleton Building,” the long-standing structure is scheduled for demolition this afternoon, opening the door to new possibilities on one of Downtown Muskegon’s most prominent parcels.
For years, the City and its partners worked diligently to secure funding to redevelop the property. Despite significant community interest and extensive planning efforts, persistent challenges prevented the site from moving forward. After careful evaluation, the Muskegon City Commission voted to proceed with demolition—clearing the way for future development that better aligns with current community needs and market opportunities.
Contractors notified staff last night that the final stages of the demolition would begin today, Tuesday, June 24. Demolition is expected to take place between 2:00 and 5:00 PM, depending on progress.
⚠️Demolition Update 06/24/25 @2:06pm: The updated time frame from the crew is now between 5–6 PM for the building to come down. Crews are actively preparing the site, cutting notches into beams and hanging chains to assist with the demolition. Expect to see additional road closures going into place soon. Stay tuned here for more updates as we get closer!
Public Viewing Information:
For those interested in safely observing the demolition, the best vantage point is from the Terrace Street side of the Downtown Baker College parking lot (801 Terrace St). A 1,000-foot safety perimeter will be established around the site, and onlookers are asked to remain outside this zone for their safety.
Updates, photos, and video clips will be shared throughout the day on the City of Muskegon’s official social media channels. Follow along as we document this moment of transition—and the exciting opportunities to come.
