Help Shape the Future of Trails in Muskegon with the STAG Plan

June 2, 2025

MUSKEGON, MI — The City of Muskegon is calling on residents, visitors, and trail users to help guide the future of its trail system through the Shoreline Trails and Greenways (STAG) Plan. Whether you walk, bike, or run, this is your chance to have a say in how Muskegon connects its parks, beaches, neighborhoods, and destinations with safe, accessible trails.

The STAG Plan focuses on improving and expanding trail connections throughout the city and along the lakeshore. By linking existing trails and creating new paths, the plan aims to make it easier and safer to get to the places people love—like parks and Lake Michigan beaches, as well as to everyday destinations like work, school, and shopping.

What Are Trails?
In this project, “trails” refers to paved, off-street pathways that people use for non-motorized travel and recreation. These trails are designed to connect people with nature, recreation, and commerce, all while promoting wellness and alternative transportation options.

Why Now?
The STAG Plan is funded by a partnership including the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the City of Muskegon, the Muskegon County Bicycling Coalition, and Muskegon County. Completing the plan now helps the community identify top priorities for trail development, which makes it easier to secure funding for future construction.

How to Get Involved:
Community input is critical to the success of the STAG Plan. There are several ways to participate:

  • 📍 Take the STAG Survey: Share your ideas about where you’d like to walk, run, or ride in your neighborhood at mkgcity.com/stag-survey

  • 🎲 Pick Up the Trail Design Game: Available at the Muskegon County Visitors Center (610 W Western Ave), this fun interactive activity lets families and friends design future trails.

  • 🗣️ Join an Event: Several events are planned, including pop-up booths at Parties in the Park throughout the summer. Attendees can stop at the park office and let staff know they’re there for the Trails meeting to receive free admission.

This is your chance to help design a more connected, active, and accessible Muskegon. Learn more, get involved, and let your voice be heard—because where we go next depends on you.
