Nelson House Relocation Update

July 8, 2024

Wednesday, July 17th, the Nelson House, once slated for demolition, will be on the move! In August 2023, the City Commission approved a contract with Deitz House Moving Engineers, Inc. to relocate the Nelson House from its current location at 1292 Jefferson Street to a vacant, city-owned lot at 382 W. Muskegon Avenue. In June 2024, the City Commission approved the purchase of the house from its previous owner, Muskegon Public Schools.

The house was built as the home of Charles D. Nelson, a prominent Muskegon citizen for whom Nelson School and Nelson Neighborhood are named. The house will be moved into the Houston Historic District and will be listed for sale in as-is condition to be renovated by a future private owner. Details on the future sale of the house will be shared soon.

Deitz House Moving Engineers, Inc is hosting a “Nelson House Relocation Event” on Tuesday, July 17, 2024, if you or someone you know is interested in the process.
