City of Muskegon Parks & Recreation Introduces Exciting New Youth Programs: Sports Day Camp and Start Smart Basketball

Muskegon, MI – August 5, 2024 – The City of Muskegon Parks & Recreation Department is thrilled to announce the launch of two exciting new youth programs designed to promote active lifestyles, skill development, and family involvement in sports. These programs, Sports Day Camp and Start Smart Basketball aim to engage the community’s youth in fun, educational, and supportive environments.

1. Sports Day Camp

Taking place from August 19-23, the Sports Day Camp offers a dynamic experience for children to learn the fundamentals of a different sport each day. Held from 9 AM to 1 PM daily, this camp will include engaging games, drills, and scrimmages to foster a love for various sports. The program is open to children aged 8-12 and is designed to enhance their physical abilities, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Dates: August 19-23, 2024
Time: 9 AM – 1 PM
Location: Smith-Ryerson Park
Cost: $25 per child for the entire week
Activities: Daily focus on different sports, including drills, games, and scrimmages

2. Start Smart Basketball

The Start Smart Sports Development Program is an innovative instructional initiative that prepares young children for organized sports without the pressure of competition or risk of injury. Parents and children work together in a supportive environment to master basic skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, and batting.

Starting with basketball, this program is specifically designed for children aged 5-7. The six-week program will be held on Tuesday nights from September 10 through October 15, with each session building on the last as children show improvement.

Program: Start Smart Basketball
Dates: Tuesday evenings, September 10 – October 15, 2024
Time: 5 PM – 6 PM or 6 PM – 7 PM
Location: Reese Playfield
Cost: $25 for the entire six-week program

Our Master Plan survey in 2023 showed feedback that our community is very interested in more youth sports being offered in Muskegon. Sports Day Camp will provide a fun and engaging way for kids to learn new sports, while Start Smart programs will allow our youngest athletes to develop fundamental skills in a supportive environment,” said Kyle Karczewski, Parks & Recreation Director for the City of Muskegon.
