Peace Officers Memorial Day
May 15, 2025
Today is Peace Officers Memorial Day.
Observed during National Police Week, this day honors the law enforcement officers
across the country who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed:
Here in the City of Muskegon, we remember and honor Detective Charles Dewitt Hammond, who was killed in the line of duty 100 years ago this year.
In 1925, Detective Hammond was shot while attempting to arrest a man for passing counterfeit bills. Though wounded, he continued to pursue the suspect, disarmed him, and prevented further harm. He was a 13-year veteran of the Muskegon Police Department, a husband, and a father of four.
📍 He is laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery, Muskegon.
On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, during Muskegon’s Police Officer’s Memorial Service, we honored Detective Hammond and all officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Held at the Michael E. Kobza Hall of Justice, the event brought together Muskegon County law enforcement and community members. Detective Hammond’s family was in attendance and placed a flower at the memorial in his memory.
🕊 Later this year, the Muskegon Police Department will continue honoring Detective Hammond’s legacy with special community-focused tributes. More details will be shared in the coming months.
We will never forget.
