City of Muskegon Crews Responding to Storm Debris – Residents Asked to Place Materials by May 30

After Thursday’s strong weather swept through the area, City of Muskegon crews have been working diligently to clean up storm-related debris across local neighborhoods. To help expedite the process and ensure all areas are serviced in a timely manner, residents are being asked to place any storm-related yard debris at the curb no later than Thursday, May 30.

For larger debris that does not meet the guidelines of the City’s regular yard waste pickup program, city staff will collect materials from the terrace — the strip of land between the sidewalk and the street. Crews will not be able to collect debris from private property, so residents must move all materials to the terrace for pickup. To assist cleanup efforts, residents are also asked to stack debris neatly or cut large limbs into sections 8–10 feet in length.

In addition to the city’s storm response efforts, Republic Services will continue to collect smaller branches and brush as part of Muskegon’s regular yard waste program. Their guidelines include:

  • Branches must be 4 feet or shorter and 4 inches or less in diameter.

  • Items must be placed in yard waste bags, 35-gallon cans marked “Yard Waste,” or tied in bundles.

  • Each bundle or container must weigh less than 35 pounds.

  • Pick-up will occur on each resident’s regular trash collection day.

City officials are reminding residents not to attempt to move any debris tangled in utility wires. If you see branches or other materials entangled with overhead wires, contact your utility provider immediately for safe removal.

Anyone with questions or concerns can contact the Muskegon Department of Public Works at 231-724-4100.

City officials thank residents for their cooperation as cleanup continues and encourage everyone to stay safe as crews work to restore order following the storm.
